The Process:
Nanyang Technological University’s Student Community Engagement Office runs an initiative called the Social Impact Internship Stipend, with the aim of exposing its student population to careers in the field of social impact. Seeking to help its students be more intentional about their internship experience, the team asked Bold At Work to look into designing a learning experience that would support them in doing so. We designed tools with the aim of support their internship experience from end to end.
We started with facilitating an an exploration around the students’ values and strengths, as well as the interpretation of these values and strengths in the social impact space. Students also delved deeper into what called them to the social impact space, through our facilitated Story of Self Exercise. To support reflective learning during the course of the internship, we designed a learning journal with exercises curated to help students make sense of their experience. Finally, upon completion of the internship, we deployed two more tools: the Juraseek © work goals as well as the Two Lives exercise, to support students in defining what their Good Work mix looks like for them.
Rather than leaving the internship takeaways to chance, the intentional learning design enabled students to enter with a clear frame of what they were looking to find out during their internships, provided support throughout with a learning guide, and also helped them to design their next step forward with intention.
