Martin
The Freelancer; The Helper; The Player
We couldn’t believe it when Martin shared with us his actual age! He may look young, but he has had many experiences and wisdom to offer. He initially signed on in the army, but later left when he got injured. Following which, he sought to develop his skill sets in various capacities and today is a part-time associate at Skillsfuture Singapore.
Working part-time has allowed Martin to make more time and energy for other activities that he values -- including caring for the community garden, educating cyclists in the community, leading the Malay committee in his neighbourhood. While he enjoys his current lifestyle, he candidly shared how the flexibility also came with the need to have self-discipline. Nevertheless, he certainly knows how to play as well -- he shares that he also enjoys playing Tropic Storm and Super City.
Besides being an active community volunteer, Martin also looks out for others staying around him beyond these more formal capacities. He shared how his neighbours would look out for one another and recounted how he had to call an ambulance late in the night once because he heard his neighbour’s call for help after falling down at home.
